First Time Github Users Guide

Steps to create a fork, clone and create a PR in Github:

Fork the repository:

  1. Go to the siglens repo on GitHub.
  2. Click on the "Fork" button in the top-right corner of the page. This will create a copy of the repository under your GitHub account.

Clone the repository:

  1. Open a command window on your local computer.
  2. Use the git clone command followed by the URL of your forked repository to clone it to your local machine. For example: git clone https://github.com//.

Make changes and commit them:

  1. Navigate to the cloned repository on your local machine.
  2. Make the desired changes to the code or files.
  3. Stage your changes using the git add command. For example: git add .
  4. Commit your changes using the git commit command. For example: git commit -m "commit message"

Push changes to your forked repository:

  1. Use the git push command to push your changes to your forked repository on GitHub. For example: git push origin branch-name.

Create a pull request:

  1. Go to your forked repository on GitHub.
  2. Click on the "New pull request" button.
  3. Select the branch with your changes as the "compare" branch.
  4. Select the original repository you forked from as the "base" branch.
  5. Provide a title and description for your pull request.
  6. Click on the "Create pull request" button to submit your pull request.
