With the merge of #380 and #381, hcxdumptool will now run without fatal errors on my MIPS big Endian system, thanks!

I suspect that there are some non-fatal endianness issues still lurking, however. A quick, non-scientific test didn't net me any handshakes in an environment where I definitely expect them, and do get them when using other tools (airodump-ng and aireplay-ng). As most development and testing is probably being done on little endian systems, this seems like an easy place for bugs to creep in.

I'll do some more testing (side by side with BE and LE systems, etc). But any ideas on specific items to test, or areas of the code that may be more prone to endianness issues, would be useful.

Good to hear that it is compiling without fatal errors. Now let's hunt for the BE problems.
I don't have a BE system here to test and the target system is a Raspberry Pi.

Can you please attach a pcapng dumpfile recorded by hcxdumptool that include a complete AUTHENTICATION sequence and a pcapng CUSTOM BLOCK:

I asked this, because hcxdumptool's requirements are many times higher than the requirements of aircrack-ng.

operating system: Linux (recommended: kernel >= 6.4, mandatory: kernel >= 5.10)
chipset must be able to run in monitor mode. Recommended: MediaTek chipsets (due to active monitor mode capabilities)
driver must (mandatory) support monitor and full frame injection mode
gcc >= 13 recommended (deprecated versions are not supported: https://gcc.gnu.org/)

and hcxdumptool's transmit radio tap headers (two different headers dependent of the attack):

Same device, same interface, same channel. hcxdumptool does show my "test" AP eventually, but it shows with a blank SSID for a while, or sometimes a 'garbage' non-ASCII character, or sometimes the actual SSID.

Another interesting comparison. I downgraded the device to an ancient version (OpenWrt 19.07.8, running hcxdumptool 6.0.1). Same hardware.

Attached a modified version of hcxdumptool. Please backup hcxdumptool.c. Than replace it by the debug version. Compile and runt it:
$ sudo ./hcxdumptool -i INTERFACENAME --rds=1 -exitoneapol=7 --tot=5

This version store the traffic from hcxdumptool to the driver, too. That allows to detect mail formed frames caused by an ENDIANESS issue.

hcxdumptool does not REASSOCIATE, DISASSOCIATE or DEAUTHENTICATE a CLIENT if data traffic is in progress.
Most APs are hardened against this attacks.

Another epical fail. I have not noticed that debug mode has been enabled:
Okay, I did a git pull and enabled the debug mode.
The first DEBUG mode wasn't designed to run entire attacks. To discover ENDIANESS problems, only a few incoming and all outgoing packets are monitored.
By latest commit this has been fixed. Now incoming frames which are mandatory to run an attack and all outgoing frames are monitored.
Please do not enable DEBUG mode. Compile hcxdumptool and run:
$ sudo hcxdumptool -i interface --rds=1 -c your_operating_channel
If that doesn't work as expected, please enable DEBUG mode run:
$ sudo hcxdumptool -i interface --rds=1 -c your_operating_channel
and attach the pcapng file.

I have run a new round of tests. I ran both the normal and debug versions multiple times, in case of any driver errors. I checked dmesg and didn't notice any ath9k driver messages, but I did notice some messages related to netlink. There were many of these, here is a small snippet:

Some more BE problems has been fixed, but not all.

I still need the value of the AUTHENTICATION sequence field and the value of the AID field.
In contrast to all other values, this values must not be converted to LITTLE ENDIAN on my system. So I guess they are little ENDIAN and they must be converted to BIG ENDIAN on a BE system.
But that need to code a special debug version.

Some good and bad changes with this one.

First is a brief look at the official github snapshot version:
Yesterday's version was rendering all SSIDs properly, while today's version is giving nonsense characters. I'm getting one or two real SSIDs, but they seem to be being randomly assigned, sometimes to the wrong MAC-AP, then they disappear, or reappear... There are also far more MAC-APs than yesterday's version showed.
Here I ran it unconstrained to my test AP's channel.

Here I ran the official github version constrained to my test channel. It properly detects and gives the proper SSID for my test AP, but also incorrectly gives the same SSID to another nearby AP. Also various broadcast and multicast addresses are being called APs when they aren't. The MAC of my test client device (5228c21586e8) is also showing as a MAC-AP, when it is only a station. I did force an authentication to my test AP during this capture, but no EAPOLs made it into the pcap.

Next I tried the authseq modified version. This one did notice the client attached to the test target, which is good! I turned wifi off and on on the client a couple of times to force new authentications. authseq and aid stayed always 0, never changed. I looked at the pcap (attached below) and did not see any EAPOL messages.

Finally I tried the 'beacon subtype' version. I think the endianness is not detected correctly, I get a different result to yours:

The major attack is the REASSOCIATION attack which is a hundred times more effective than a DEUTHENTICATION attack.
If the counters are fixed, it will be more effective. :)

The TX branch should now be fixed, too.
The last part is NETLINK. Therfore please debug the NETLINK communication between hcxdumptool and the kernel.
First start the NETLINK monitor mode (nlmon):

$ sudo ip link add  nlmon0 type nlmon
$ sudo ip link set dev nlmon0 up

Start recording:

$ tshark -i nlmon0 -w netlink.pcapng

Okay, I did the above. I used the BPF but did not lock the channel, and the client was not present. If you need some with the client present I can re-run the test.

No need to apply a filter to hcxdumptool, because the NETLINK socket is a control socket. There is no wifi traffic inside.

This is all I see in dmesg, which seems good:

Note the difference, I got a + under the 3 column here, but no + under the 2 below.
hcxpcapngtool does not produce a useful output for this case... but when I look at the pcap file in Wireshark, I see a full sequence of messages 1 through 4. So there may be some sort of lingering oddity here.

I noticed that in the case where message 2 is detected but not message 3, messages 2 and 3 have the same sequence number... likewise where message 1 is detected but not message 2, message 1 and 2 had the same sequence number. Not sure if this is the reason but it seemed suspicious.

Another test case is maybe working as intended, but I will mention it anyway for the sake of completeness. When I run the test like this:

Simulating a case where I know the MACs but am not sure of the precise channel in advance.

Then the results are not so great. I can see the phone get deauthenticated and then reauthenticate, but hcxdumptool is not catching it. I assume the tool has hopped to another channel before the phone reconnects and misses it. Understandable. But then even if I leave the tool running for quite a long time it doesn't seem to reattack the same target, so I never get the handshake for the target specified in my BPF file.

R = target AP respond to hcxdumptool (+) - empty column attack stopped (see next column) or target does not respond
1 = target AP respond with M1
AP must be in range
3 = M2M3 from target AP and associated CLIENT, hcxpcapngtool can build a MESSAGEPAIR and hashcat can work on it
AP and CLIENT must be in range
P = M1 contain a PMKID
S = WPA-PSK AKM is in use (otehr AKMs are not supported, because hashcat and JtR can't handle them.

CLIENT display below:
E = target CLIENT respond with EAP-ID
CLIENT must be in range
2 = target respond on hcxdumptool request with M2 (M1M2ROGUE or AP-LESS attack), hcxpcapngtool can build a MESSAGEPAIR and hashcat can work on it
CLIENT must be in range

If you specify an attack BPF it is good to now which channel is in use
Than run hcxdumptool on the operating channel of the AP.
If you prefer to scan all channel, just increase the stay time on the channel.

The default scan channels are 1a,6a,11a because the entire range (all channels is a way too big to perform successful attacks "in time").

Thanks for the explanation!

I found the problem on my side: I was using an older version of hcxpcapngtool (v6.2.4) that wasn't able to create the hash file for one of those. Switching to the latest version got a hash for both files.

Everything seems great, thanks for dedicating so much time to making this tool. Are there any remaining endian related items that you would like me to test?

I think, all BE uint 16, 32 and 64 values should be BE ready, now.

Due to several changes it is mandatory that hcxdumptool and hcxpcapngtool version numbers are matching., because none of the tools can handle data from newer tools. They are backward compatible only.

BTW:

Compiling software for OpenWrt is a bit of a chore. Most devices that run OpenWrt are routers, with the resource constraints you would expect -- not a lot of RAM or storage. So running the build environment on the device itself is usually not practical. For this reason, the OpenWrt people have developed an elaborate cross-compiling setup that can produce builds for all the huge variety of OpenWrt devices out there -- little endian, big endian; MIPS, ARM, x86 processors...

The basic overview is:

Install the build system
Set up the build system
Configure it for your particular device
Build a complete image for your device following the steps given above, to build all dependencies (tool chains, etc)
Build a single package

Which, honestly, is way too much trouble for 99% of people. It took me many hours to get to that point.
The easiest answer for people who want the new version will be:

Wait for hcxdumptool/hcxtools to issue a new release (v6.3.3?)
Wait for a PR to the OpenWrt project updating the package feeds
Wait for the next SNAPSHOT build that incorporates the new version
Download the .ipk (OpenWrt package) for hcxdumptool/hcxtools from the snapshot site and install it on their current OpenWrt 23.05 system

Thanks. I'm sure this will be helpful for other opwnwrt users.
Version 6.3.3 release is planed in early January.
There are still some driver workarounds (broken active monitor mode on e.g. mt7921u) to do.
